Artistic Director: Chris Kohn
Chris Kohn graduated VCA (Directing) in 1998 and is currently enrolled in a PhD in Theatre Studies at Monash. Chris has worked for a variety of companies as a Director, Dramaturg, Video Artist and Writer, and is a co-founder of SPST. With SPST he has directed and co-written Tonight I Must Be Brave, directed The Architect and the Emperor of Assyria, 4xBeckett, Woyzeck development, Agoraphobe development (Next Wave Kickstart), The Black Swan of Trespass (also co-writer, composer, musician and video designer), The Eisteddfod. In 2003, Chris directed Raised in Captivity (Red Stitch) and was Assistant Director and musician for Neil Armfield's production of Waiting for Godot (Company B Belvoir.) In 2004 he directed the hip hop show Diatribe (Melbourne Workers Theatre), was Dramaturg/Video Designer for Sideshow (Rawcus) and a director for Rawcus' creative development of Box Set. He has been Affiliate Director with the MTC and on the review panel for Next Wave festival.
In 2004 he underwent a program of professional d evelopment meeting experimental directors, writers and producers in New York and Europe funded by the Ian Potter Cultural Trust and received the 2004 George Fairfax Memorial award for Outstanding Achievement open to graduates of the VCA School of Drama. His writing on the theatre has been published in Real Time. He co-produced the tours to New York of The Black Swan of Trespass and The Eisteddfod. He is developing new projects with Downstairs Belvoir (B Sharp Boiler Room) and Malthouse Theatre. Chris is currently Artistic Associate at Arena Theatre Company. His shows with SPST have been nominated for ten Green Room Awards and received five, including two for Best Production in the Independent category.
