The Black Swan of Trespass

The Black Swan of Trespass is a theatrical exploration of the Ern Malley Affair, one of the most important literary hoaxes of the 20th Century. Devised by two young poets in Melbourne in 1943, the "experiment" caused a literary scandal which rocked the foundations of the emerging Australian modernist movement.

Writers Lally Katz and Chris Kohn treat the topic with a combination of serious critical inquiry and irreverent theatrical flair. The production incorporates live music, subtly integrated video elements, taxidermy and original songs.

Since its origins in a tiny cellar in North Melbourne, this show has become one of the most celebrated to emerge from Melbourne 's thriving independent theatre scene in recent years.
